Project Complete – Mills Avenue kitchenCRATE

The Mills Avenue kitchenCRATE was unique enough to get it’s own distinct category.  Let’s call it “kitchenCRATE Plus!”

What made this project unique? Quite simply, it’s the most extensive kitchenCRATE to date.  Not only did this homeowner get the standard kitchenCRATE elements (granite countertops, refinished cabinets, tile backsplash, sink, faucet, garbage disposal, etc.) but they added extensive updates.  More on that in a bit.

Worth the Extra Days

These extra elements turned the standard 7-day kitchenCRATE project into an 11-day kitchenCRATE project.  We think you’ll agree the results were worth the wait.

We started with this:

And ended with this:

The Homeowner’s Experience

We asked the homeowner a few questions regarding her kitchenCRATE experience.  Here’s the result:

What was your favorite part of the kitchenCRATE process?

My favorite part was always knowing what was happening, who to expect in my home and being kept abreast of the progress.

What’s your favorite thing about your new kitchen?

Our new kitchen is just perfect.  All of the choices that were made by Jim and me actually worked out!  It’s so light and beautiful. I spend a great deal of time in the kitchen and now it’s pure joy.

Were you surprised by anything related to the process?

The biggest surprise in this process was how much I enjoyed the kitchenBOX crew. They were all informative about what they were doing and why (if it wasn’t obvious).  When they left at night everything was clean and all tools put away.  I’m thrilled that the job is complete but I actually miss the guys! - Judie Piscitello

The Story of the Job

Due to extensive kitchenCRATE add-ons, this project took a slightly different route than is normal.

The first day was our typical “demolition” day.  We remove all the old appliances, countertops, backsplashes, doors and drawers, hardware, etc.  Demolition is done only after we install a dust barrier to protect the rest of the home, floor protection to protect the existing wood flooring and set the kitchenCRATE in front of the home.

The next day was spent roughing in the new electrical.  This included 9 new can lights (some of which were installed in place of the old light box), new switches and outlets, preparation for new under-cabinet lighting and even some re-routing of existing electrical that had been previously abandoned.

The following days were spent patching the drywall infill at the old light box and priming and painting the cabinets, doors and drawer faces.  This  process takes time to do right, and we love the way these cabinets turned out.

After the cabinet boxes were painted, we set the granite tops.  This included a custom peninsula design with a cantilevered top, a custom window sill, and even a new granite top for the pantry baking center.

Immediately after the granite was installed, the tumbled tile backsplash went in, and grouting occurred the next day.  Despite a last minute, Saturday-morning grout-color emergency, the grout turned out perfectly.

The following days were spent installing the new doors and drawer faces, finishing out the electrical trim, plumbing the new sink, faucet and garbage disposal, and installing the new appliances.

By the end of the day this kitchen (last remodeled in the 1980’s) was transformed into a delightful display of classic materials with a clean, bright look.
